Who in their right mind would start a blog about stuff like swing sets? Well, apparently I would
I am Erwin Purtell, a writer and freelance journalist from Scandinavia who is very interested in home improvement, carpentry, gardening and so on.
When I was a kid my dad built a swing for me in our backyard. Like most swings back then it was simply a piece of wood hanging from a suitable tree branch – but boy did I have a lot of fun on that swing!
With my friends we used to see who could jump the farthest from the swing, you could spin around on the thing and in the winter we had a very particular form of snowball fight where we took turns trying to dodge on the swing while the others tried to hit you with snowballs – you probably can guess where we aimed for “maximum points”!
In the process we all, even the less sporty kids, got a very good workout to boot of course. And it was with that in mind that I recently Googled the subject and was pleasantly surprised to discover the rich selection of residential playground equipment available these days.
Among more simple swings, trampolines and the like, you can literally order your very own playground castle – just like the ones found in bigger playgrounds – right now!
You can still put up the basic garden swing if you want of course. But if you want to have something fancier and more diverse for your kids, and don’t have the time or the skills to build it yourself, you should have no trouble finding something suitable among the rich commercial playgrounds available today.
Even if you may not be able (or have room for) what the Obamas have in their White House “backyard”, you can still find many great offers in a more suitable price range.
And that is where this blog comes in – bringing you news on how to turn your backyard into an active playground for your kids.
As our kids today generally tend to live a much more sedentary life than children did only a few decades ago, I think it is important to do whatever we can in order to come up with things that will make the kids want to go outside and play again.
And don’t forget that you can have a lot of fun playing with them every now and then as well – personally I still do enjoy a good snowball fight!
